Born in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, and raised on a farm in the Free State, my mother who is an oil painter instilled in me a love for art from a very young age. I studied graphic design from 1999 to 2000, before attaining my degree in pharmacy in 2004. Now married with two boys, and after finding that both my sons excel at art, I decided to get back into painting myself.
Inspired by microbiology, physiology, astronomy and other sciences, I create abstract fluid artworks by using acrylic paint and glaze as a base. Using my chemistry knowledge, I add several different substances in my mixtures, including organic material, to create different effects with colour.
Research has found that art may reduce stress and anxiety. I love to teach art as I have seen how it helps to relax people. Chronic illness adds several stressors to people’s lives. My techniques help even the person who thinks they have no art ability to find a hobby that they never thought they would be able to practice.
