Survivor & Little warrior princess

Towards the end of my first chemo session, the nurse sat with me going through a list. This list contained all of the possible side effects I could expect to experience after the chemo was administered. It included restless legs, leg cramps, sleeplessness, nausea, to name a few. I remember smiling and asking her how I would know if it was the chemo or the pregnancy, as I was experiencing some of these already!

In June 2017, at 6 months pregnant with Mila, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Mila was with me through the lumpectomy and 2 red-devil sessions. 2 more red-devil, 12 taxil, and 30 sessions of radiation followed after she met this world.

Mila’s due date kept changing depending on how we both reacted to the chemo, making it difficult to explain to friends and family about when she’d arrive. We just kept saying: “We don’t know, it depends,” or “We’ll see after the next chemo.”

Doné had her hands full with nursing me, making sure I eat well, coping with the flood of queries, secretly planning the baby shower, keeping up with all the different appointments – all while remembering to take pictures of my ever growing tummy. She was my bodyguard and my soft hiding place every day.

I tried to jot down what I could, planning to write a journal, but I failed and life just kind of happened in and around me. Never mind pregnancy brain – chemo brain is real, people! I spent most of my time sleeping and craving fruit, Wimpy burgers, and milkshakes.

During all of this, there were bad days, and during those I would snuggle closer to God and just spend time with him. During one of those cuddle moments, I wondered if I could rewrite the Lord’s Prayer on a more personal level for myself. “My Father who is in heaven…”

One verse that stood out for me was “Give us today our daily bread.” I realized that God gives me every day what I need for that day. That bread could be the strength, patience, courage, or the will I needed to go on.

From that moment on, it became our motto during the good and the bad days: Just today. Do everything I can just for today. Don’t worry about tomorrow’s things or what could happen. Just focus on the now and what I can manage today.

You know that saying of “live life like every day is your last”? No. Live every day like you have everything you need. Spend time with love. Share. Dream. Believe. Read that book, bake that tricky cake, paint, call that friend, and take that 2-hour bath with chocolate and champagne. Do it today. Do it all and don’t worry about tomorrow. Just do today to the fullest you can with all you’ve been given.
